TIKKUN OLAM

TIKUN OLAM is a series of works created during the current war. In ordinary times, I engage in “mending holes” – repairing tears in beloved garments and fabrics using a traditional weaving technique. The tear becomes the center of the creation, emphasized through contrasting colors, and transforms into a new aesthetic texture. My worldview is rooted in repair and preservation, as opposed to abandonment and unnecessary consumption.

This series, drawn on an iPad using the Procreate app, is inspired by ancient Oriental textiles, primarily from the archives of The Yousef Jameel Centre for Islamic and Asian Art at the Ashmolean Museum. I created digital drawings that imitate fragments of antique fabrics, but infused with the colors of the Israeli and Palestinian flags. This combination symbolizes a dream in which we are woven together, healing historical conflict.

The term Tikun Olam (in Hebrew “repairing the world”) was chosen as the title of the series as a continuation of my manual work — holes mended in blue-and-white within red-green-white-black, and vice versa. The tear is not hidden, but reunited in a new, visible and unified way. In Jewish tradition, Tikun Olam expresses a moral responsibility to improve society and the world, whether through mitzvot (commandments), social justice, or the pursuit of peace. My series embodies this idea — mending the conflict as a vision for shared life.
